World’s Hardest Working Countries

Who could ever guess South Korea to be first in the list of Hardest Working Countries in the World with the average employee working 2,357 hours a year which includes only 11 public holidays. South Korea is followed by Greece in the second place with its people working 2,052 hours a year. Last in the rankings is Iceland, where the average employee works 1,794 hours.

These 2008 rankings are from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for its members. There might be other countries who can top this list, if they were part of the OECD.

A google maps of the rankings for Hardest Working Countries via Forbes is available here.

What is ArcToolbox ?

Geoprocessing is an important feature of any GIS software application. If the application being talked about is ArcGIS, then there are numerous geoprocessing functions that come in-built with the application. One of the simpler ways of accessing these functions is through the ArcToolbox, which is a collection of several of these features packaged into a single utility.

Here’s the link to a podcast on “What is ArcToolbox ?” describing what it is, its features and how it fits into our GIS workflow.

America’s Richest Counties

One may assume that the richest counties in the United States either span the New York area or the San Francisco Bay Area which together are economic hubs of the nation. Although, people shell out millions of dollars for small luxurious homes in these areas, the nation’s wealthiest live in the suburbs of Washington D.C..

Forbes.com lists the twenty richest counties in the United States, of which, ten counties belong to Virginia and Maryland. Fairfax County, VA., Loudoun County, VA., and Howard County, MD. top the list which was based on median household income from the 2006 census.

With D.C. being the center for many federal agencies and business that work in tandem with the federal government, the well-paid government employees are moving to the suburbs as they become more and more wealthier.

Here’s the link to the press release from ESRI on this new feature http://www.esri.com/news/releases/08_2qtr/arcgis9_3_mashup.html.
